We welcomed Sam into the world of PR and marketing at the end of February as he started his journey with Voice on a six-month Kickstart placement.
The Kickstart Scheme was set up to provide funding to employers to create jobs for 16 to 24 year olds, giving young people an opportunity to learn new skills and work in positions that may have not been accessible to them beforehand.
Sam has been an amazing addition to our team and over the last six months he has worked super hard whilst always staying motivated and willing to learn. We have seen Sam grow and learn new skills over the last six months and we are so proud of all of the work he has achieved.
Sam shared what he has learnt with Voice:
“Before Voice, I worked for the RNLI on Cornish beaches and I gave surf lessons on Fistral beach and in Australia. After meeting Nichola at a Kickstart event and immediately clicking, I felt like joining Voice would be a great opportunity for me to gain a lot of life and business skills.
“I had some doubts when I started because working in an office was never on my radar and I was unsure how I would react to being in this kind of environment.
“This did not last long as I met the whole team on my very first day. Everyone welcomed me and I got to know the whole team straight away. My role was very clear and everyone reminded me that it will take some time to get used to everything so I shouldn’t worry about making mistakes and if I had any questions, the team would always be there to support me at any time.
“As my placement continued, I began to feel confident in my role. I was given the chance to be involved in some amazing opportunities.
Some of my favorites included:
- Taking images and videos of a recent Oltco installation. Coming from a media background, this was very exciting for me. It was awesome to watch Oltco’s work and see the craftsmanship of the team installing a resin bound driveway.
- Attending a networking event at the Eden Project which focused on how businesses can adapt to a future of sustainable and eco-friendly business structure and how to create a happy team environment rather than business being all about profit.
- Creating videos for St Francis Dogs Home in Newquay – who doesn’t love the idea of spending the day amongst dogs.
“I was also able to improve my writing skills through drafting content for Voice and for clients whether that’s through social media posts or writing blogs. My writing has improved massively and I really enjoy being creative in this form.
“Coming to the end of my placement now I feel like I have improved on so many of the skills I had but wasn’t using, so for that I am grateful for my time with Voice and can leave with lots of confidence and an experience with a truly amazing business. Nichola is a fantastic leader and it shows as the team around her are happy and are being given amazing opportunities regularly.”
Sam is now heading off to New Zealand to start a new journey. Thank you for all of your hard work Sam. We have loved having you as part of the team.
